Lucky Well Vineyard, Russian River Lucky Well sits atop a knoll on the western edge of the hills outside of the towns of Graton and Sebastopol. The area is home to some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the Russian River, due in large part to the perfect confluence of Goldridge soil, climate, and elevation. The vineyard is in an area often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Russian River because although it’s on the coolest, foggiest edge of the appellation, the knoll places the vineyard above the fog line. That means its fruit receives more gentle sunlight, which allows for slow, even ripening throughout the growing season. Fruit from this site offers both the high-toned wild berry and earthiness typical of the cooler Sonoma Coast and the power, richness and complexity of the Russian River Valley. Stephens Vineyard, Green Valley, Russian River This ten-acre vineyard was planted in 1997 by Charlie Chenoweth and Earl Stephens, using four distinct clones: Pommard #4 and Dijon clones 115, 777 and 667. All are planted on 101-14 root stock, picked for its ability to grow well in both the rich Goldridge soil and Franciscan plate on this site. The property features steep slopes and the well-drained soil for which this corner of the Russian River Valley is famous. This cool site produces healthy, moderately vigorous vines, and the diverse clonal selections add to the complexity of the wines produced. Enticing aromas of violet and ripe cherry, followed by red fruit flavors of raspberry, cherry, and strawberry and finishing with cinnamon and spice notes are signature elements of this vineyard. The 2017 growing season was a roller coaster ride with more extreme weather than usual. A plentiful winter rainfall led into a warmer spring, allowing for normal budbreak, good vine growth and steady ripening through the end of the growing season.
