Dark fruit and violet aromatics fill the glass, while on the palate a mouthwatering richness and balanced acidity sets up the concentrated core of cassis, dark cocoa, walnut, huckleberry, tobacco and a hint of crushed rock.
A dark inky violet color hints of the concentration and delineated aromas to come. Floral aromatics mixed with the scent of fresh rain fill the glass, while on the palate mouthwatering minerality sets up the concentrated core of cassis, dark cocoa, walnut, black tea, and tobacco with a hint of cedar. Rounding out this symphony are fine-grained, supple tannins that create a deliciously long and silky finish. The Growing Season:
The Growing Season
Late winter rains persisted through June and created challenges in some vineyards during berry set and development. Few heat spikes occurred during the year, so growers opened vine canopies to ensure sunlight, warmth and good air circulation around grape clusters. Yields were lower, but the mild summer let the fruit slowly ripen. The cabernet franc benefited from the longer hang time, and is perfectly balanced.
The 2011 debuts the first blend of two of Napa’s best Cabernet Franc vineyards. The first is perched high atop the Vaca Mountain Range in the eastern hills of Oakville. This organically and biodynamically farmed vineyard is planted in the red, iron-rich, volcanic soil for which the eastern hillsides of Oakville are famed. Grapes grown in this environment display intense yet balanced flavor and richness, which are perfectly suited to our style of Cabernet Franc.
The second is from the famed Crocker vineyard, known for putting Napa Cabernet Franc on the map. Located in the St. Helena Appellation just south of town and its comprised of alluvial soils that gradually change as the terrain gently slopes down toward the Napa River. Years have been dedicated to sustainable farming to improve the already superior soil. The complex and varied components of the soils, which enjoy excellent drainage that forces vines to draw deeply from the earth, express themselves in powerful and balanced wines.
